1-to-1 Lesson

Our one to one lessons are ideal for complete beginners, people returning to paddling and also for people who want to develop their skills whilst exploring the local coast at a relaxed pace. You'll spend two or three hours with a senior instructor, either Simon or Dave, and you'll be learning new techniques, exploring a new environment or trying a new type of water craft, or you could do a combination of all three.

These are available for a limited time (until at least 1 June), at a much reduced price, due to current group size restrictions associated with the pandemic. Lessons will take account of guidance surround social distancing from start to finish. You can read how we're creating safer spaces and activities here. One-to-ones we are currently offering are:

Introduction to Sit-On Kayaking

Get to grips with the basics in Cullercoats Bay. We'll start with a relaxed warm up, then cover everything from the basics of lifting and launching, through to forward paddling, manouevering and self-rescues. Our boats are very user friendly, so by the end of the session we should have time for a short exploration of the local area too.

Sit-On Kayak Touring

If you'd like to be a little more ambitious with your journeys, this session will consider what to pack, how to plan your journey, local places to launch and land and of course we'll go explore. We'll typically launch from Cullercoats so options to explore are north to Whitley Bay, including the rock gardens of Brown's Bay, or south to the River Tyne entrance, where we'll consider navigating the mouth of the river. We can also launch from the Brierdene if you'd like to go seal spotting around St Mary's.

Introduction to Surf Kayaking

There is nothing like the buzz of riding a wave. Give it a go under our instruction. We'll meet you in Cullercoats, head round to Longsands, one of the region's best surf spots and we'll surf. Paddling out through waves, landing through surf, handling your boat on a wave and basic turns are all covered.

Introduction to Sea Kayaking (closed cockpit)

New for 2020, we have a small fleet of Dagger Stratos touring sea kayaks. These long and streamlined boats cut through the water effortlessly compared to a sit-on kayak. We'll cover the basics in Cullercoats Bay, including how handle the longer boats and how to easily and safely exit the kayak in the event of capsize. if you feel comfortable we can then head out for a short journey and really get a feel for the boats.

Introduction to Open Canoeing (flat water)

We'll meet you at the River Wansbeck and you'll explore the techniques required to launch and paddle a 16' canadian style open canoe. Open canoes are very different to kayaks as you have one paddle blade and the canoes are very long, so rapid movement is not possible. It's all about forward planning, whole body movement and feeling how the boat responds to what you are doing. Open canoes are ideal for families as you can carry a lot of cargo, they make a great touring boat for multi-day exploring. Come and give it a go.

Introduction to Stand Up Paddleboarding

Cullercoats is a great venue for learning to paddleboard. You can learn the basics in the shelter of the bay, such as getting on your feet, efficient paddling, manouevering and how to get back on the board from the water. Once you've mastered that, we can enjoy some rock-hopping and exploring local bays and beaches.

SUP Touring

If you'd like to be a little more ambitious with your journeys, this session will consider what to pack, how to plan your journey, local places to launch and land and of course we'll go explore. We'll typically launch from Cullercoats so options to explore are north to Whitley Bay, including the rock gardens of Brown's Bay, or south to the River Tyne entrance, where we'll consider navigating the mouth of the river. We can also launch from the Brierdene if you'd like to go seal spotting around St Mary's.
