FAQs
What will I see and do?
We will meet you at the day’s venue - a coastal location within one hour of Newcastle upon Tyne. You will need your own transport. The venue will be chosen a couple of days in advance based on the weather.
On arrival you will find your group tent, sauna and equipment is all prepared and waiting for you. We’ll start by settling into the group accommodation, relaxing with a hot drink and chatting with your guide about the day’s itinerary. Your guide will then lead you through a cycle of ice dipping in the North Sea, followed by periods of heat therapy in our Finnish tent sauna. The sauna offers both dry heat and steam.
The therapeutic benefits of heat therapy and cold immersion have long been understood by our Scandinavian neighbours. It makes you feel great in the moment! Scientific study has revealed regular hot and cold therapy can have long term benefits too, boosting immune response and calming chronic inflammation.
After your ice dip session, your group will retire to the group tent to relax and warm up by the log fire. At this time, your lunch will be prepared over an open flame from the best local produce. Dishes we have served in the past include:
Geordie Bangers Salt & Pepper Burgers, with caramalised onions, sauteed mushrooms and Northumbrian Cheese Co. original cheese.
Chilli prepared with Nicholson’s of Whitley Bay beef, produce from Jamieson’s of Cullercoats and served with hunks of PureKnead Sourdough.
Magpye award-winning vegan pies, served with chargrilled local vegetables and Belle & Herbs small batch ‘Kraut’.
Even though we are cooking in the wild, we will accommodate vegan, veggie and gluten-free diets, or specific food allergies, as long as we know in advance.
After lunch, you can enjoy a final sea swim, a beach walk or just continue to chill out in your own private group space. We always have plenty of books to read and we’ll keep the hot drinks flowing.
What level of ability is required?
You should be comfortable around water and able to swim 25m. You should also be generally fit, healthy and able to undertake moderate exercise without difficulty. If you have a heart or blood pressure condition, we advise seeking the advice of your doctor before engaging in cold water immersion or heat therapies.
How long does the experience last?
We will be on the beach from around 10am until 3pm.
What do you provide?
A professional lifeguard and guide to facilitate your swimming
Wetsuits to help you acclimatise, though you may end up in just your swimming shorts or cossie.
All required safety equipment
A Finnish log-fired tent sauna, suitable for 4 people
A group tent with a log burner, for up to 10 people
Camp chef
Your choice of locally sourced food, hot drinks and Marlish spring mineral waters
